What is a Laser Safety Specialist? Is it the same than an LSO (Laser safety Officier)?
"When the employer or laser user is not able, without assistance, to properly determine the necessary safety arrangements and protective measures for eliminating or minimising the risks to health arising from the use of laser equipment, then the advice of a Competent Person..."
"The Competent Person need not be an employee of the organisation concerned, but may instead be an external adviser. The advice and assistance of a Competent Person is often only necessary temporarily, for example when first establishing appropriate protective control measures or when evaluating the risk prior to significant changes to procedures or equipment"
(extract of the technical report IEC TR 60825-14, Section 3.2)
Thus, the Laser Safety Specialist (LSS) is the competent person, who may be an external consultant. In contrast, the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is an employee of the company, and their duties do not necessarily include those of the competent person; rather, they rely on the LSO for support.
