UNE-EN 12254: Screens for laser working places.
Safety requirements and testing.
This standard specifies the performance requirements and labeling system applicable to a set of passive barriers, temporary or permanent, intended for protection against laser radiation. We will call them in general "screens".
This standard includes methods for testing the functionality of the screens, as well as specifications for the documentation to be supplied with the product.
EN12254 laser protection screens are designed to protect the user from:
- unintentional exposure to direct and/or diffuse laser radiation
- time-limited exposure to lasers, based on performance requirements determined in the risk assessment.
And very importantly: EN 12254 only applies to supervised screens intended to be placed in workstation installations where laser radiation reaches a maximum average power of 100 W, or a maximum energy per pulse of 30 J.
Beyond these power or energy values, there is no protection available according to EN 12254. Standard 60825-4 should be used and the corresponding tests and certifications should be carried out.
Some laser protection elements certified according to EN 12254 standard are:
- laser safety screens (barriers, walls)
- laser safety curtains
- laser safety windows
If in doubt, consult the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) of your institution or workplace.
